Leave original message open in Mail when replying
Why not just use the preview pane? I almost NEVER open a message in a new window since you can see it just as well in the 3-pane view.
Leave original message open in Mail when replying
I tend to be slow about replying to my e-mail, so I generally open anything needing a reply in a new window so that I don't forget about it when new e-mail comes in (as might be the case if I only viewed things in the preview pane). I've found that works better as a reminder than using the "flag" feature, which is too easy to ignore.

A variation on your technique, but one requiring less work: I simply start my reply instead. I even select the text snippet(s) that I specifically want to reply to, so they're there waiting for me when I get around to replying. |
