10.4: Reset password under 10.4 using 10.3 install disc

Regarding password reset using an install disk:

1. Physical access to the machine is required.
2. Physical access trumps other security mechanisms.
3. Therefore, use of the install CD or DVD is NOT A SECURITY RISK.
4. The real risk is in unsecured physical access to the system.
5. This applies REGARDLESS of the operating system in question.
6. This is most certainly true.

How very true, even an open firmware password can be easily reset with a little monking with the RAM and clearning the nvram. And there's always the good 'ol method of just putting the hard drive in another computer and grabbing all you need that way.

About the only measure I know of that stays true to security even with physical access is file vault. Correct me if I'm wrong, but afaik the user password is the only way to decrypt it, or will transferring it to another computer and setting a master password allow access to it?
