10.4: Reset password under 10.4 using 10.3 install disc

Minor nit: Tiger "CDs" aren't the normal way of installing Tiger. Most people who purchase Tiger will find their O/S on a DVD--and have to get CDs from Apple when they find their machines don't have DVD readers.

With regard to replacing the CD drive with a more powerful one, I used a different tack.

Instead of actually replacing the drive that came with my system (Mac Mini with DVD Reader/CD Writer), I purchased a 5.25" external drive enclosure from the local PC hardware shop. Most of these come with either USB 2.0 or Firewire interfaces (some have both). Installing the "internal" DVD burner is easy with these, and when you plug it into your Mac, everything just works.

The benefit of using an external drive is that I can move it from my Mac Mini to my iBook and even over to my Linux box when I have the need to burn a DVD on one of those systems. Thus, if the Tiger Install DVD has a problem dealing with my DVD burner, I can still use the DVD reader that came with my system.

Oh, important safety tip: DO NOT OPERATE YOUR COMPUTER UNDER THE INFLUENCE! This should be patently obvious to everybody, but I'm still amazed at the number of nasty emails, blog postings, and instant messages sent that are inspired by liquor or other mind altering substances. That clever line you wrote last night will come back to haunt you when your boss receives it the next day...! Be glad you only reset your password and didn't burn any bridges this time!

Hope this helps.

Thinking about it, maybe one should not make telephone calls whilst under the influence or even better talk at all. Better still, do not leave the house, or best just stay in bed. Or do not start drinking in the first place.

Seriously, it is much more fun to use the computer while drunk than while being sober...
