lipo could be a better alternative, see "man lipo"

So, if I understand well, to make some free room you have to erase a portion of universal binaries program and keep a normal copy. That's sounds nice except that you increase the room by 70%, not decreasing by 30%.

lipo operates on one file at a time. ditto can process a whole directory tree containing multiple executables with one command.

nice thought but ditto --arch /dir1 /dir2 flattens out at least the first set of folder in /dir1 into /dir2.
