Check crash reporter log file for disk space usage

I think the Finder itself has this capability.

Double-click your hard drive icon and go View ... as List. Then bring up View ... Show View Options and check off Calculate all sizes.

You'll hear the disk grind for awhile and the sizes of each top-level directory will begin to appear in the Size column. Click on the disclosure triangle next to any directory to see the sizes of items within it. You can even click on the "Size" tab at the top of the column to sort the directories from largest to smallest.

Of course, this will not turn up hidden files in /var/log unless you have made invisibles appear in the Finder. (There are a number of ways to do that, and I'm sure it's covered in some past tip, but I like using OnyX myself.)
