Check crash reporter log file for disk space usage
Incidentally, does someone know of an app that can scan directories and show how much space directories are taking-up. Something like a graphical
du where you can collapse and open folders to see where you hard drive space is being used-up when you want to clean-up.

Since I work on Macs, Linux PCs, and Windows PCs, I would highly suggest JDiskReport, a freeware Java utility that actually runs well on all three systems.

I personally use a free program called WhatSize. It's a very nice Mac-Native app that does what you are asking. I have had trouble getting it to display graphs, but when it comes to a hierarchical display of directories and their sizes, it does a nice job.

A little more amnual, but you can do this in the finder...

I think the Finder itself has this capability.
Double-click your hard drive icon and go View ... as List. Then bring up View ... Show View Options and check off Calculate all sizes. You'll hear the disk grind for awhile and the sizes of each top-level directory will begin to appear in the Size column. Click on the disclosure triangle next to any directory to see the sizes of items within it. You can even click on the "Size" tab at the top of the column to sort the directories from largest to smallest. Of course, this will not turn up hidden files in /var/log unless you have made invisibles appear in the Finder. (There are a number of ways to do that, and I'm sure it's covered in some past tip, but I like using OnyX myself.)

Disk Inventory X does this via treemap display. A bit slow, but visually nice. Inspired by KDirStat and WinDirStat.

Two of the best are WhatSize (free) and OmniDiskSweeper ($15 if you want a delete button).
Disk/Directory usage app
I found a nice little app called (appropriately enough) "Whatsize." The About... dialog lists http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize as the place to get it. Free.

There is a program called inventory x that does exactly what you ask. It will scann the hard drive and tell you the file size of files on your hard drive. It will even give you a color coded map of the files on your hard drive. It is also free. |
