10.4: Fix an iSync/Palm Conduit install issue
Authored by: visionaut on Aug 02, '05 06:03:32PM

I too was having a problem when trying to get iSync v2.1 to "Enable Palm sync". It would fail with an error stating that Palm Hotsync wasn't installed correctly - but I was pretty sure it was. Sure enough, checking MacOS X Hints had a discussion on it that led to me fixing it.

I had tried running Repair Permissions - but that didn't work for me on this problem, I'm guessing probably because the software in question isn't from Apple, but it's Palm's Palm Desktop 4.2.1b and it's install receipt likely contained no permissions-related info, or Disk Utility ignores it).

I was able to fix the problem by changing the owner and group on /Library/Applications Support/Palm HotSync (and all enclosed items) to my useraccount (to read & write), and admin group (read only). Same for /Library/Applications Support/Palm Desktop. Both were previously set to owned by system, group wheel (and only reda to my account). My useraccount is an admin account, and I had installed under the admin account as Palm's info said to, but it had left those folders with incorrect permissions necessary for iSync to install the iSync Palm Conduit and create a Disabled Conduits folder and move some Palm conduits to it.

All's now well and working for me.
