Check system fonts to resolve strange system issues
Authored by: wsdr on Jul 29, '05 10:02:09AM

Font Book has a feature in the File menu: "Validate Fonts," which will operate on fonts you highlight in the font list. I don't know when Apple snuck this into Font Book, but I didn't notice it until Tiger.

I found this the other day when I was getting an odd crash. I keep "Tail Chaser" (a Konfabulator widget) open all the time, showing my /var/log/system.log, and the log showed something was up with my fonts. Many of my clients use Font Doctor, part of Suitcase, but I didn't have it. On a whim, I opened Font Book and poked around, and there it was: "Validate Fonts." I did a select-all on my font list, ran it, and it identified a handful of font issues. Taking it's advice, I removed the errant fonts and my problem went away. Thanks Apple-- another useful upgrade that I've never seen any one crow about.
