The Capture widget works very nicely for this purpose. After I read this hint, I tried to simply perform a screen capture the normal way (and quickest) while playing a DVD (SHIFT-COMMAND-3), but a dialog box pops up and says that the screen capture feature is not available while DVD Player is running. Yet, somehow, the Capture widget performs this task regardless.

To make things even easier, detach the Capture widget from the Dashboard (see the hint here). That way there's no Dashboard juggling.
