From an anonymous hint submission...

This was submitted as a hint, but seems better as a comment here...
There was an earlier hint to shorten the length of a track in iTunes by converting it. If you have a track that's 5 minutes, let's say, and 15 minutes of silence (like a hidden track), the previous hint suggested choosing "Get Info" on the track, Changing the Stop Time under the "Options" tab, and then converting the track. When you convert, the new track is the new length you chose, leaving out the clutter.

Messing around today, I found that the same trick works directly from CD imports. Just choose "Get Info" before you import a CD track, and make your changes. When the track is imported into iTunes, the shortened version is what you'll get.

I've been using this with imports from CDs happily for a while. One thing I'm interested in is if there is any way to set multiple start and end times, so as to just cut out some middle silence or whatever but keep the result as one track. Of course this is easy enough with QT Pro but it would be cool to have within iTunes - it would also be easy enough if iTunes would allow 'Join CD Tracks' for the resulting .mp3s or whatever as well.
