Have a look at iAlert
I used Growl for a while, but then I discoverd iAlert. It works without defining rules in Mail and you can costumize your alerts easily using simple HTML tags and variables. No Apple Scripting required. It also works with iChat and other programs and provides some cool services. Seems much more mac-like to me than Growl.

Growl is great. I've had no problems with it so far...and mail notifications work just fine. Obviously I also use it with Synergy, cyberduck and various other apps...

like GrowlMail.
you're speaking from a developer standpoint (we consider scripts to be as applications). with Growl, you fill out the notification before you post it. this is a more efficient use of resources in OS X's preemptively-multitasked environment: other notifications don't have to be kept waiting while Growl interpolates variables. this hint is written from a user standpoint: install GrowlMail, and it will Just Work.
neither Growl nor GrowlMail requires use of AppleScript.
Growl works with over a hundred programs, and iChat is one of them with a third-party iChat script.
Have a look at MacBiff
It's a port of Biff, and handles IMAP accounts. A small, unobtrusive number in the menu bar tells you how many unread mails are waiting for you. In the menu you can see the folder hierarchy in your respective accounts, and check the mails "from" and "subject" header (visible in the menu directly), and launch mail.
Oh, and it's free (and supports Growl) http://www.forkit.org/macbiff --- |
