this tip worked like a champ. thanks...

remember to sudo rm the /Library/Recepts/vpn* files and dirs since they're owned by root.

also, i am not sure if this made a difference but after i did the clean install, i followed another tip regarding unloading and loading the kext especially when switching locations:

> sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/CiscoVPN.kext
> sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/CiscoVPN.kext

(where > is the prompt of course)
