10.4: Old HTTPMail Plug-In prevents Mail import
Authored by: diamondsw on May 20, '05 11:38:03PM

This may have nothing to do with HTTPMail - I've never used a Mail plugin, and I'm having the same problem. I have thousands of messages - several entire mailboxes - that will not show up. The mail is there (and can be opened directly from the "Messages" folder), but Mail will not show it. When I get new mail, I've seen it disappear right before my eyes.

Tiger has been nothing but a disaster for me. And to think I did things the "safe" way, waiting until 10.4.1, repairing the disk and permissions, doing an archive and install and not migrating anything, and it's just a complete cluster----. I've never had such incredible problems.

Did you have the problems after running 10.4.1. ? I did an Archive & Install of Tiger, and experienced a very smooth transition. Nothing problematic occurred. And I had years of mailboxes in Mail 1.0.

It was only after running the 10.4.1. installer via the Software update, that I had problems with Mail: messages not being shown (while they were there - you can even see the number of unread messages and all; or access them from the Library/folder). Mail 2.0 was also incredibly slow at Quitting.
After trying several things (importing, deleting pref.; even deleting my v-card; nothing worked), I decided to run the 10.4.1. installer again, but now as a standalone download. And this really worked: I repaired permissions, restarted in safe mode, ran the standalone installer (and strangely enough, it ran again), restarted again, repaired permissions, restarted and opened mail: everything normail again.

That worked for me, so I'm happily busy with Mail 2.0.1. now.
Hope it helps for you.

I really appreciate the tips; however I waited until 10.4.1 was released to upgrade at all, and used the standalone updater (not Software Update). Interesting to see that perhaps all of this madness began with 10.4.1, not 10.4...

I actually downgraded to 10.3.9 and lost my last week's worth of mail (and time, for that matter).
