10.4: A possible fix for IP printing troubles

I had exactly the same problem. In my case, Tiger saw the print server and the correct queue, but I kept getting NT_STATUS_LOGIN_FAILURE messages. Switching to Jet Direct did the trick for me.

10.4: A possible fix for IP printing troubles

I also used IP Printing with earlier versions of OS X. I did find a workaround for our setup using IP Printing and OS 10.4 with the print queue.

The JetDirect solution does work, but it's important that our print jobs go through a print queue.

We use Novell ZenWorks to manage our print queue. We also have iPrint setup. For example the iPrint url could be:
print.mydomain.com/ipp/office-printer

We don't currently use iPrint on the Mac OS so to make IP Printing go through the queue we use the following settings:

With Mac OS 10.3 and earlier the ip printer setup
host name: print.mydomain.com
queue name: office-printer

With Max OS 10.4 these setting needed to be adjusted to
host name: print.mydomain.com
queue name: ipp/office-printer

I also noticed that the "get info" feature doesn't properly display the queue name. It in fact converts the Printer name into a queue name. So if the above printer were named: "Laserjet Office Printer" get info would incorrectly display the queue name as: laserjet_office_printer even the setup name is correct as ipp/office-printer.

This may or may not help depending on your print queue server. I have no idea what changed between Tiger and Panther that requires this queue name adjustment.
