Tons of new hints today!

I have to set a cutoff in the RSS at some level, and at most normal times of the year, 10 more than fits the need -- the average per day around here is 5 to 6. If I were to arbitrarily double the feed to 20, the bandwidth hit would be quite sizable.

I may consider bumping it to 20 if I keep running more than 10 hints a day for a week or two, though. We'll see how it goes as I work through the queue. Rest assured, though, that on days there are more than 10, there will be a note published in the first 10 letting RSS users know there are more articles.

Rob,

why don't you make an RSS feed that has, say, the last 25 or even 50 hints, but only contains the subjects and no summary info?

That way people can choose to subscribe to the shorter, more-detailed RSS or the longer summarized version?

This should not involve any increase in bandwidth since most of the RSS content is the content of the hint itself rather than the subject?

Cheers,

D.

Nonono. I like the summaries.

20 with summaries is my vote. (As if I had one.)

Whoops. Just read your post more thoroughly and see you propose a choice. Sounds good.

Why not make the number of hints in RSS autoadjustable to show all the hints for today but not less than 10?

Rob,

GeekLog lets you specify an arbitrary number, or a time-period. So, why not just have the RSS feeds configured to show all new articles within the last 24 hours?

That way, if there's one hint posted within 24 hours then the RSS feed will only contain 1 entry and people like me and others who are relying more and more on the RSS feeds now that Safari includes a decent reader will know.

Also, it should save you some bandwidth for those times when you're out of town. No need in serving up an RSS feed for old articles (3 or 4 days old) when there aren't any new ones.

Just a thought.

I imagine newer versions of Geeklog probably have that feature. Mine, alas, does not -- it's a heavily tweaked version of 1.3.7 (security patches manually installed, basically).

Upgrading is a royal PitA, and I just haven't gotten around to it yet (and the Geeklog build number is a moving target; so I'd been waiting for it to stabilize, given how difficult an upgrade is for me to do).
