10.4: Improve Spotlight's search speed

From past experience, the 'feature' that tends to impact speed the most with lists such as this is the displaying of icons. Since Spotlight insists on displaying each custom icon, this will slow down the process in direct proportion to a system's graphics display capabilities. So, for example, it seems to be quite fast on my dual 1.8ghz G5 with 2.2GB of ram and ATI9800pro, but significantly slower on my 1Ghz PowerBook.

Not just the graphics system, but also the hard drive. It has to load those icons from disk. Even if it caches those icons with the index entry, it still has to load that information from disk.

Turning off the icon would be a nice option, but personally I when I'm in a folder, I want Spotlight to default to searching only that folder. I don't care about how many matches there are across my hard drive when I'm in a particular folder and using the search toolbar item.

Yup I totally agree, on top of this I when I search from the finder the result is always the same... bogus! I search a folder in which I know there would be tons of results for my search and after a few mins it's still searching. Although, I admit not having searched the net yet for this issue.
