10.4: Use Spotlight to find music on your iPod
Spodlight is quite the delicious hack. The developer is interested in your ideas, so use it and give him feedback. Also, it appears that Apple can't really shut down this sort of indexing since mdimport is crucial to Spotlight. My concern is that they might see this as leading to file-sharing via iPod. Maybe I should keep my mouth shut ;)
Take off the tin foil hat.
I really don't think that it's going to be a problem. Apps like Senuti haven't been shut down, and the closest thing to it which was shut down was the plugin which made iTunes do the copy process, which probably got a little too close to making Apple liable. You're right though, they can't "shut it down", just like they can't shut down
cp -R /Volumes/iPod ~/Desktop. There is only so far they can go to keep people from doing things which could be construed as illegal, and indexing hidden files on an iPod is nowhere near passing that line.

Apple could hardwire the _iPod_Control folder as a no-index folder. I doubt they would, but it is certainly possible. |
