external monitor woes

After much hassle, under 10.1.2 I was able to use my external monitor and have not only the lid on my TiBook closed, but the LCD *off* -- it appears that this is no longer possible with 10.1.3. If anyone has been able to get it to work, or would like to share a working recipe to actually getting the ability to use an external monitor with the lid closed and LCD off, *please* speak up.

The methods I have tried are the sleep/usb-attach-keypress which never worked, and the quick-close-lid-after-chime approach, which worked until "upgrading" to 10.1.3.

You're not alone, but you are, for the near future at least, sh*t out of luck. On both usenet and apple boards, everyone is reporting this problem. It's pretty unbelievable how a system can go BACKWARDS on an update.

One individual did get Apple on the phone. They are aware of the problem, they WERE aware of it BEFORE the release, they apparently left it up to us to "discover" it (thanks Apple, jerks!), and they don't know when or what, if anything, they're going to do about it.

The only solution I've seen that made any sense was to reinstall 10.1.x from your CD, then reupdate to 10.1.2. In theory, this requires much less hassle in the X environment, so if that half-closed glowing TiBook screen bothers you, it's the only recourse you have for now.
