Yes, this was the reason for the change. That is why the old shortcuts work unless the mouse focus is in a text field. Then the text selection functions use those key combinations.

Personally, I think in a web browser URL field, the text selection mechanisms aren't needed - they're more for Word Processing. But they felt the need to make the change anyway. I really feel that in a browsing environment, the arrow keys made more sense.

Word processing? No way. I use command, option, and shift with the arrow keys everywhere for selecting text or moving the insertion point, even when renaming files in Finder. I always thought it was weird that they used those key equivs for switching tabs because they are more commonly used for text.
