localhost connection problem
Authored by: inchhigh on Mar 22, '05 05:18:31PM

I can't get this tool to connect to my local databases. It connects fine to remote database servers, but I can't connect using localhost or 127.0.0.1
it gives me a strange error. I know the user/pass are correct as I can connect from the command line or with cocoa mysql.

Has anyone else encountered this?

the error I get is:
"Connection Error
Could not connect to MySQL instance at localhost.
Error: You have an error in your SQL syntax near
'interactive_timeout=1000000' at line 1 (code 1064)"

If I change the user/pass to incorrect settings I get the error I would expect saying 'access denied for user ...etc' so I know it's not the user/pass

I think you might be having the opposite problem from me. I always connect to MySQL from my Mac using ssh to forward ports. When I told the MySQL Administrator tool to connect to "localhost", it tries to use the socket in /tmp no matter what, even though I'm not running MySQL locally, haven't asked it to use the socket, and I've specified a non-default port number.

I finally got it to connect (sort-of) by using "127.0.0.1" instead of "localhost", but it still seems to be confused about which machine it's talking to. For example, it says the server is stopped, and it looks for an error log based on my local hostname. Looks like the tool still needs some work.

Anyway, maybe you would have better luck connecting to "localhost", since you actually are running a local instance.

Same error here. :(

I used 127.0.0.1 not localhost, username and passwords are correct.

$ mysql --version
mysql Ver 11.18 Distrib 3.23.56, for apple-darwin6.6 (powerpc)

I have similar problems, but a different error msg:

Connection Error
Could not connect to MySQL instance at localhost.
Error: Unknown system variable 'sql_mode' (code 1193)

I don't even know where to begin to look for the solution to this and I know the username and pass are correct because I get a different error msg when I change them

Any Ideas???

Check the version of MySQL you're running. I just realized I'm running version 3.23 (for legacy purposes) and the client shows as only compatible with MySQL 4.0 and up. This could be the cause of the problem. (I get the same error, too.)
