Actually, you want to type command (the Apple key)-tilde. The tilde is the ~ character at the top left of most keyboards.

Original post likely was a typo. at_sym is correct. Use command (apple key) tilde (~) while in Finder, then, for example, /Applications/Utilities in popup window to display all files and folders in that directory.

Control ~ gets a (useless) contextual menu pointer.
