10.3: Print from Windows XP to a shared Mac printer
Authored by: JustinTyme on Feb 10, '05 12:10:31PM

This worked for me - Print to a shared Samsung ML-1740 on a Mac G5 from Windows XP.

1) Make sure you can see the shared printer in Windows in the "Add Printer" setup. I couldn't at first after installing the printer on the mac - so I went through the process to "unshare" Windows Printing in the Control Panel on the Mac and then shared it back - I also rebooted the Mac

2) Once you can see the shared Mac printer, simply "add" it to your Windows machine's printers by completeing the wizard.

3) Now, this was the key, for the newly installed shared printer, go to the printer properties (right click on the printer) and choose the "Advanced" tab. Then choose "New Driver". Choose from the available drivers "Apple" and "Apple Laser Writer Pro 600". The key is that it is a post-script driver. It doesn't seem to matter which model is chosen.

Worked for me.

Thank you! Until I switched printer drivers, nothing worked. So, thanks again.

10.3: Print from Windows XP to a shared Mac printer

I have tried all of the above but still am not able to print. The solution which gets me the furthest is to set up a second printer via CUPS on the Mac and then connect to it via a URL on the Win XP machine.

The job does arrive on the Mac, but it never gets printed: the queues says something along the lines of "generic:waiting for response from host".

Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

10.3: Print from Windows XP to a shared Mac printer -- USE BONJOUR
Authored by: gregn on Nov 26, '05 02:02:36PM

Excellent news. After struggling with the hints listed here, I got my HP all-in-one (connected to a Mac Mini) working from an XP laptop in 5 minutes by downloading Bonjour from Apple.com. (I saw it mentioned in the support forums there.)

Previously, I was getting "access denied" even though I could see my shared printer from XP. Bonjour solved it.

Good luck.

I too tried Bonjour after hours of struggling to get a Brother HL5140 connected to a Mac Mini working on a XP machine and it worked first time with no problems. Bonjour is definitely the tool to use!
