Print via Rendezvous and AirPort from Windows
Authored by: roberri on Feb 09, '05 07:47:18PM

I've installed Rendezvous on my Win XP SP2 box which has my Canon i550 printer attached to it via USB.

Does anyone know if it's possible to "see" this printer, via rendezvous, from my iBook or does it *have* to be connected to either the iBook or my Airport Express?

Failing that, can you buy some sort of USB->Ethernet print server that I could plug into my wireless router (Belkin model which is bridged to the AE)?

Thanks for your help!!!

I don't know about Rendezvous printer sharing from the Windows side, having never tried it. I believe that the Windows Rendezvous implementation only resolves domain names and listens for service announcements. I don't think it has the ability to publish services (i.e. printer sharing). If someone knows otherwise, please correct me.

I do know that if you're trying to set up a Rendezvous printer on Windows, the printer must be connected to an Airport (Extreme or Express) base station. Apparently, Mac OS X printer sharing doesn't actually use Rendezvous to broadcast its service; it uses some feature of CUPS, the underlying UNIX-based printing system. Hence, the Rendezvous Printer Setup Wizard on Windows won't see those printers. (You can still use IP Printing directly, however.)
