A fix for a MS Office 2004 spell checker/language issue
Authored by: tmhayes on Feb 08, '05 05:35:44AM

Hi, the problem is very reproducible. Let me try and explain it another way. Supposing you are in Sweden and you want to retain your keyboard layout as Swedish (or Irish), but you want to write ALL your Word documents in English and have them ALL spell checked using the UK English dictionary. Currently you will not be able to do this automatically using Word 2004. You will be able to set the default language to English UK in Word 2004. This will APPEAR to modify the Normal template. Now quit Word and start it again. Now type in UK English (colour rather than color etc.) and make sure the Irish or swedish keyboard layout is selected. The automatic background spell checker will not detect the difference (auto correct may change color to colour, so it should be DISABLED for this test). Also add some crazy spellings like thdyeted. Now, if you go to tools, spelling and grammer, you will just get a message back saying, spell check complete, but the document won't actually be checked. Try it and let me know how you get on. If you have success I owe you a Guinness! Best, Tom.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for posting your tip. I have been having the same problem with computers at work. It is such a relief to see that someone else is having the same problem as me, I have done many Googles & Apple's discussion board searches, etc looking for a similar case (I must look here first the next time). I will give your suggestion a bash tommorrow.
Did you know that the country flag can be hidden by unticking the "Show input menu in menu bar" in the "Input menu" tab in System Preference --> International

Mise le meas,
Fiachra.
