Universal BootX file
Yes and no. The BootX file in 10.2.8 and earlier did not support the G5. You needed a special build of 10.2.8, and the accompanying BootX file to boot a G5. The BootX file which comes with MacOSX 10.3.x supports all mac models that are capable of running Panther. There is no special BootX file for different models. You can tell at a glance which BootX file you have, just by looking at the beginning of the file. The current ones say
whereas the older, non-G5-compatible, ones say
I speak from experience. I just upgraded from a G4 to a G5 by booting the latter in Firewire Target Disk Mode, reformatting the hard drive, and cloning (using CarbonCopyCloner) the G4's hard drive onto the new one. Works just fine!

I'm sure that process works fine, but wouldn't it have been simpler to just boot from the G5's (presumably) existing OS X, connect the G4 to the G5 in Target Disk Mode, and let the G5's "Sytem Migration" utility (or is it the Setup Assistant?) do the job of importing the G4's files, prefs, etc.?

That would not have migrated all my Unix software nor my other system tweaks. This procedure, on the other hand, produced an environment which was an exact clone (in every detail) of the previous one. I should say, also, that this is the third time I've used this procedure for hardware upgrades — the second time I've used it between processor generations (previously I upgraded from a G3 iBook to a G4 iBook this way). The only thing you have to be sure of before proceeding is that the version (and the build) of the Operating System on the "old" machine is as new, or newer, than the one on the "new" machine. In the present case, I had 10.3.7 (build 7S215) installed on the G4 PowerMac, whereas the G5 came with 10.3.5. |
