Activate Canon scanner buttons for multiple users
Authored by: eagle on Jan 21, '05 11:44:30AM

I have the opposite problem, and I wish I knew a way around it. I have a CanoScan LiDE 30, and I installed CanoScan Toolbox in my account. When I am Fast User Switched out and my wife's account is active, she can still use the buttons on our scanner... but CanoScan Toolbox starts in MY session, which loads our iMac's CPU... and it doesn't stop until I switch to my account and Quit the application.

I find this very annoying.

This software is arse, it spams syslog continually. The daemon is only necessary for the face buttons, which I never use, so I remove it from startup.

I'm with michaelkvance on this one. I have the Canon Lide 30, and it chucks two messages into the system.log (check Utilities > Console) every second. A waste of resources, and no wonder your CPU usage goes through the roof!

Bin it. Use the facilities of an application (such as Photoshop) to scan your images then save as PDF or whatever. The buttons are pointless and a resource hog.

I don't get the log activity with my Lide 35, but I do agree that the CanoScan software doesn't work very well. The "copy" (i.e., act as a photocopier) function is sloooooow....I replaced it with an AppleScript that works much better.

I am the author of the original hint, and for me it seems that once I figured out how to make it work with multiple users, the Canon software and the front buttons have been quite useful. I am slowly moving to managing important incoming snail mail (bills, payslips, insurance statements etc.) through to combination of scanning them to PDF and then managing the PDFs with iView Media Pro.

I have found it quite convenient just to shove a document to the scanner and hit the button (without even seating myself at the iMac, necessarily), knowing that the PDF will be automatically stored to a date-stamped directory in a particular location, which iView will detect next time I start it up.

I suppose the difference between using the CanoScan software utility and the hardware buttons mainly only matters when I want to chuck a document in without necessarily seating myself at the machine. Otherwise, the software utility would do just fine.

fast user switching

Slightly off topic but how are you getting canoscan to work with fast switching? My 670U refuses to be seen when switching is turned on.

Probably you mean this problem:

It's a well known problem and can be resolved. It is caused by the fact that the installer puts wrongly two files on the HD for both Lide 20 and 30. And you only need one of them.

The LIDE 30 (and 1240U) installers add two drivers and two button managers, even though you only have one of the scanners. You have to disable the button manager for the device you do not have so that it doesn't look for the device.
Also, I have tried the above hint with that scanner, and it doesn't work. Once the button manager is launched for the first user, it captures the device and won't let the second user's button manager find the device. Thus, you get the spamming again.

Could you pls explain how do I go about disableing that button manager for the second device. I really want to know that before I go and re-install the thing once again. I am tired of it but buying a new scanner is not an option at the moment. Sorry for the trouble...
