Macworld Day One - Pictures and videos

Was looking at the photo which shows the bank of Mac minis with the Apple displays, and was just wondering, will a Mac mini fit onto the display's "foot"?

That would look quite smart, especially with the wireless mouse and keyboard, and you could run any cables through the hole in the display's stand. Shame you can't get a twin power brick instead of two separate ones though.

Is the audio out an optical/regular combo jack like on the iMac G5?

If so, all you would need is a Bluetooth remote and you could have one under your TV & plugged into a sound system for the true living room computing experience.

Rob.

As far as I can tell from the tech specs pages for the Mac Mini and iMac, it's just analog audio out for the Mini. The audio istings for iMac and Mac Mini say:
  • Mac Mini: Headphone/audio line out
  • iMac: Headphone/optical digital audio output
Note the optical in the iMac description. Also notable is the fact that the iMac has an audio line in port. The Mac Mini does not. I guess if you want all the tricks you pay a more tricked out price.

I noticed somebody on MacInTouch comparing prices on an iMac 20" and a Mini with a 20" Cinema display. In that case, the iMac came out about $57 cheaper. If you compare a 17" iMac with a Mini plus non-Apple RAM upgrades and 17" non-Apple display, the price comes out about $400 in favor of the Mini.

I suppose Apple's willing to take a hit in their other departments as long as they can get people on OS X.

I also suppose that they're banking on a lot of people not doing that math.

The maths seems to show that the iMac is likely to stay apple's most popular machine for people wanting a whole package, while those looking to replace their virus-ridden PC but keep their keyboard and monitor will go for the mini.

Also, how about those people who have a PC for games etc keeping their PC and hooking up the mini to a keyboard/monitor switch box to have the best of both worlds???

I got an email from a PC user saying his friends are trading in their DVD players for a mini and hooking it up to their TV... now there is an idea - competition for Media Centre??
