Who uses the 'Grouping' tag anyway?
I don't buy from the iTMS. (It's only recently become available here, and by then I'd got hooked on allofmp3.com.)
So instead, I use the 'Grouping' tag for my own purpose: to indicate the source of each track. Most of the tracks in my library are ripped from my own CDs; a few are ripped from family members' CDs; a number I've recorded off the radio, or from my own tapes or LPs; a good number are from www.allofmp3.com; a few are from other web sites; and a few are from P2P networks. Last year, my music HD died. Luckily, I had a copy of the iTunes index file, so I knew what tracks I'd had. But after re-ripping all my CDs &c, I then had thousands of tracks to find from elsewhere, and it took ages — a few I still haven't tracked down. So this time, I've included the source for each track in its metadata. I already use the Comments field (for performers and other details), which left only the Grouping field free (which I'd never found a use for). So I've set that to 'CD', 'radio', 'tape', 'P2P', 'Mum', a URL, or whatever to indicate where the track came from. Of course, I'd prefer to have a custom 'Source' tag; but since iTunes doesn't have any, I'm happy to have the 'Grouping' tag to co-opt. (I can always use AppleScript to change things in future if one becomes available.) Does anyone else use the Grouping field for their own purpose? And does anyone else bother to keep track (ha!) of the sources of their music? ---
Who uses the 'Grouping' tag anyway?
The "grouping" tag (corresponding to the ID3 tag "Content group description") is meant primarily to segregate tracks within an album, mostly useful for Classical tracks (eg: Brandenberg Concerti, six pieces, all "grouping'ed" under "Brandenberg Concerti"--or search the iTMS for Christophe Rousset Bach Harpsichord Works to get a good gander at an example). If you use "Grouping" for your own purposes, you MAY miss out on future iTunes GUI enhancements. Note that the iTMS displays "Grouping" tracks under their own header, which does not yet happen in the actual iTunes app.
Who uses the 'Grouping' tag anyway?
I use Grouping as an extra Comments field. Using allmusic.com, I added more specific genre information. For instance, Marvin Gaye's general genre is R&B/Soul, but in Grouping I have "Soul, Motown, Urban, Smooth Soul, Blaxploitation, Quiet Storm." This allows me to make really specific smart playlists easily. Obviously, it took a lot of time to input all this info, but I just did it a little at a time. |
