This hint got me thinking about a pet peeve of mine with the international settings in OSX. Any fellow englishman/woman may have noticed that whatever setting you enter into the International system preference pane the date in the menu bar still appears the american way (backwards - mm/dd/yyyy - which is just plain wacky for us)

Based on the 'Make the PPP menu open IE instead' tip i had a fish around and worked out how to flip the month and day order round to make it read dd/mm/yyyy (at last!)

Generally following the original tip do this:

Open up System > Library > CoreServices > Menu Extras. Control-click and choose Show Package Contents. In the window that opens, go to Contents > Resources > English.lproj and open Localizable.strings.

In the TextEdit window that opens (you may have to select TextEdit for it to open), look at the last bit in the text that reads:

"%A %1m/%e/%Y %1I:%M%p"

Swap %1m with %e so it reads:

"%A %e/%1m/%Y %1I:%M%p"

Now save and restart and the date reads the way it should over here!

I did have a problem saving the document, the same problem I had with the original tip, so I used a shareware app called 'Get Info' to change the owner of the file to me. Once finished I changed it back to 'root/wheel'

Remember to back up your original first!

Cheers for the idea hbmartin

This hint was published here before. Read the thread to know how you can avoid messing up with system resources: copy the item to your user space, edit it and drag it to your menu bar.

Now, I don't use PPP menu because I have Airport with cable connection, the Open Internet Connect menu is there in the Airport menu for the rare times I travel with my TiPB. But this hint tells me how to open something else than Date & Time from the clock menu, e.g. an alarm clock app...
