I've been doing this since FCP 3 without problems...

What's wrong with opening up the dialog and naming your chapter marker?

When I want to insert a dvd chapter marker, I jog to where I want to put it, hit "m" twice, name my marker and click on the button to make it a chapter marker.

The benefit of doing this is that when the clip (or clips) get exported to iDVD, when iDVD makes the scenes menu for you, they're already named appropriately.

Isn't having your scenes named appropriately in the scenes menu a great benefit of opening up the dialog in FCP?

Is importing to your FCP-edited clip (or clips) into iMovie then bringing your clips to iDVD really too difficult compared to pressing "m" twice and making your marker a chapter marker in FCP when you name your markers?

Seriously, as far as workflow goes, if you're making the markers already, naming them in FCP is far better then doing the edit then bringing them into iMovie then into iDVD.

Perhaps this hint is for Final Cut Express users or something, because this just doesn't make sense for Final Cut Pro 3.X or higher.

The hint says to do as you describe, but it doesn't say it clearly enough, I suppose. The author says one should edit the markers in FCP. Maybe the author didn't realize that two pokes of the 'm' key will bring up the Marker dialog box.

Making many chapter markers in FCP is UNNECESSARILY TEDIOUS; I wish Apple would make that dialog box easily usable via the keyboard, and offer an option for a project such as "All new markers will be Chapter Markers". I already wrote them about it over a year ago. I use FCP often at work, and I have made hundreds of those markers. I wish I could just poke a single keystroke and get a chapter marker -- and I never want to have to grab the mouse to do it. I'm in too much of a hurry and repeated mouse use is more wear and tear on my tired hands. We already do plenty of clicking and dragging of tiny interface bits in FCP day in, day out. More keyboard control is more healthy for those of who use it constantly.
