Tsunami disaster relief...

An excellent charity is LDS Humanitarian Aid. Staff are volunteer church members or paid from member tithes; 100 percent of all donation money goes directly to those in need.

You can donate here:

one sticking point with LDS

Many countries with predominantly Muslim populations have very unhealthy relationships with the LDS Church, their charities, and Mormon missionaries. It is unfortunate, but because in those countries (unfortunately the examples I know of for a fact are in the Middle East and I don't know about predominantly Muslim countries in the affected area such as Malaysia) the government does not take well to the missionaries coming and proselytizing while doing the good works that they do, that it has become down right dangerous for the LDS to go to those areas. Because of this the LDS has a reasonable policy of not going into countries where the government or populace would be likely to react violently to missionary work.

Again I do not know the relationship of the Malay people to the LDS Church, but I would worry that if you give to the LDS, sure that money would be redistributed to almost 100%, but it may all go to predominantly Buddhist areas like Sri Lanka (and maybe not even the Hindu Tamils in Sri Lanka, but that is an entirely different problem, just simply not safe to go there) and it looks like the bulk of foreign aid is already headed that way as it is.

I think you're confusing the LDS with another Christian sect. Mormons and Muslims have a pretty cordial relationship. The LDS church is already working with several Muslim organizations in Indonesia at this moment to begin coordinating relief.

Local missionaries may be asked to help distribute supplies, but they won't proseletyze, it isn't the time or the place for such things.

Additionally, Mormon missionaries never go into a country where they don't have formal permission from the government to do so. Again, I think you're confusing them with some other sects. But if you are uncomfortable giving to LDS Humanitarian Aid, then feel free to choose another charity.

I don't know how the countries may be prioritized by LDS humanitarian aid, but I do know that the LDS church has given money many times in the past to other organizations, like the Red Cross, where that other organization is better able to help in a certain area.

The only qualification the LDS church seems to use for their humanitarian projects is where the money is most needed and can be used most efficiently.

But, like others have said, donating somewhere is better than not donating at all.
