Did you notice that Microsoft didn't do the same? They should, right?

Well I agree that they could do something on their website, but let's not forget that Bill Gates and his wife is the most generous donator in the world.

From BusinessWeek 'Top Givers'
'The year's other billion-dollar-club members include No. 1 givers Bill and Melinda Gates, the world's largest international donors, who made history this year by giving their estimated $3 billion Microsoft Corp. dividend to their foundation. It's one of the largest donations in history by a living donor. To put it into perspective, that one gift is three times bigger than the amount that America's richest family, the descendants of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. founder Sam Walton, has given during their entire lifetimes, according to our ranking.'

(Microsoft might follow on their website as they always do when Apple invents something ;-) just give 'em some time)

While they may give the most, I do not believe this should be the sole criteria for most generous. They also have the most to give from. In fact, the amount they give makes absolutely no impact on their life at all. It didn't even cost them to drop in the rankings of the wealthiest people. I don't consider it very generous if it doesn't make any difference to the giver. And I'm not the only one.

Microsoft != Bill and Melinda Gates

No doubt the Gates family will be giving a large amount. (I would argue they could give more, because I already have given a larger percentage of my income than the Gates ever will, and they would still have a nice house and all that...).

But the deal is that Microsoft, the company, has obscene amounts of cash - and should be donating (and might be, we don't know yet) a large chunk of money.

Just like I would not think that Steve Jobs is off the hook if Apple gives money. Humanitarianism is EVERYONE's responsibility. That's why it has "HUMANITY" as a root. :)

That's the way it is with pretty much anybody who gives away multiple thousands, hundred thousands and millions. They need the tax write off.

t'is true... was on the TV several nights ago. One of the news shows was talking about the major corporations who had immediately responded. I don't remember the top two, but Bill & Melissa were the third most generous.

fwiw - I gave thru Oxfam. They are not tied to US "politics"

and an interesting comment on this situation at JoyofTech... might make some reflect on where our (US) country has spent way too much $ and concern
