you are very well probably right in your first reply (i dont have a newer machine to test this on), but the ability to hold option to choose the startup disc is not what makes a new world machine. my imac 333 is a new world machine, and i cannot hold option to choose the startup disc. a new world machine is one in which the boot up rom is stored on the hard drive as opposed to on a rom chip on the logic board

Thanks for the info. My memory is getting approximate these days...

Apple System Profiler displays the same machine information in its "Software overview" and "Production information" fields. It even includes a "Sales order number" for my TiPB 500...
