Renamer4Mac - An easy to use batch file renamer
I use the application R-name, which seems to have most of the same features, plus a few extra. It does have its drawbacks, but the ability to remove extension & replace characters at range don't seem to be present in Renamer4Mac.

This app sounds ok, and I will try it out. As I am always looking for better ways to batch rename for work.

I changed the script so it now asks you to enter the two parts of the file name you want to change in the file names. and then change them both.
What gets me is I am crap at applescript and did the good old cut and past and change this and that. I got one compile error fixed that and it worked on the first try.
But no matter how much I jig it around I can not get it to do is wait until the final "ok" is clicked before it replaces the first part.. Anyone got any idea, I think it has to do with where one of the "my" calls are placed..??
