more finder.plist stuff

another way to edit this (besides a text editor and Tinker Tool) - if you have the Dev Tools installed, double-click the plist and it will open in PropertyListEditor! You get a hierarchical list of the properties. Unfortunately, you can't copy and paste properties, but it's less confusing.

I found something else here, that I thought Apple sadly dropped - the Label item for files. Unfortunately (again), this doesn't show any labels (ie from some old files I KNOW have labels), but it's a good sign that they may eventually return.

Something to do with the finder.plist - change the default column order for new windows (ie put the size before the date, a long-time preference of mine). This is easier to do in a text editor, since, as I said, PListEd won't copy/paste.

DVD/CD Autoplay

There is indeed a preference panel that can turn this off, but it's in the respective applications, not in the System Preferences. In Apple's DVD Player Preferences:Disc:Start Up, just uncheck "Start Playing Disc." In iTunes Preferences, under the "General" tab, you can select a number of options, including simply "show songs," which will prevent the CD from automatically playing. Or is there something to this I'm not following (certainly the DVD Player does not start up automatically on insertion on my computer...)
