Using this tip to fix window size from folders on desktop
Man, this is great. this morning I was getting a bit ticked by the fact that I have my finder windows set to a very minimalist view, sidebar squeezed down to nothing but icons and then list view for pretty much everything but folders opened from the desktop would not adhere to this default that I had created within finder. I only keep a few folders on my desktop from which I need to access regularly but I would like them to adhere to the same size standard.

I've found that holding down the Command key and clicking the Close window button tends to work for me for establishing a windows position and view options. Of course, if you don't want to actually close the window, this may be as much of a hassle.

My Finder never remembers my top HD window position from boot to boot. It will remember as long as I haven't logged off, but not otherwise.

Knealy, I'm in the same position as you! The only window I noticed this one is my HD -> Applications folder... I set it for list view and hiding the sidebar and when I reboot, logout or shutdown and I re-open that folder it's like a new window with icon view and all the icons are over-lapped and what not :(
