Can filenames be longer than 31 characters in OS X? If so, what is the limit?

Yup, they can be long. Very long. Longer than all three of these sentences combined. Longer than this paragraph.

They can be up to 255 characters, although you'll only see about 30 or so in the Finder views unless you use the tricks described here.
