I read this TIL on the Apple page, and it definitely seems to match what you're describing. Follow his instructions, and you should be good to go.

A general comment - everything I've read has said that HFS+ is the way to go for an OS X install, unless you absolutely need the UNIX file system formatting. There have been reports of speed hits from UFS, and there's this Classic compatability issue that you've run into. If you can do it, it may be worth your trouble to make your OS X volume HFS and not UFS.
