Using OpenLDAP for centralized data for OS X clients

According to this OS X uses open directory nativly, so it shouldn't be too much of a stretch to get it work.

Using OpenLDAP for centralized data for OS X clients

You are correct that Open Directory is based on OpenLDAP, however Apple has made many minor tweaks to OpenLDAP and if you don't have an OSX Server to copy configs from it's not always obvious how to actually set this all up from scratch on a Linux box.

My hope was to save others from the process of discovering these one by one over the course of deployment as I did. :-)
