Print to a Brother HL-1430 via a Linksys print server

I can't get my linksys PSUS4(IP printing to a Photosmart 7960) to work properly with OS X Panther. Works fine with OS 9, OS X Jaguar and I can trick the stupid winduhs boxes to work right too by setting them up locally and then redirecting them to the proper IP. But Panther is being stubborn.

Here's what I've done:

-Installed the HP Photosmart drivers off the HP website
-Installed GimpPrint 4.2.7
-Installed hpijs-foomatic-1.5

After I installed Foomatic, I could see the Photosmart 7960 driver in the IP printing dialog.

When these didn't work, I installed ESP Ghostscript, even though it had said Panther already had it and also had that nasty Jaguar ONLY! warning.

In one more desperate attempt, I installed GimpPrint 5.0....nothing.

I've tried using "Advanced" mode(Option-click on "Add+" that's how it worked with Jaguar), but the print drivers don't pop up in the "Device" drop down box, like they do in Jaguar.

So I've tried "IP printing" with the "LPD/LPR", "Internet Printing Protocol" and "Socket/HP Jet Direct" settings. I've tried the "HP IP Printing" selection, but it won't "auto detect" any of the 4 HP printers I'm using with the PSUS4's. If I select "Manual" to configure them, it says "Not Found" even though I ping the print server and it shows up. There's this other selection called "HP photosmart" in the drop down box that is totally useless too.

So does anyone have any suggestions? Advice?

Thanks!

Hello Toivo,

You've just saved me $80 :-) I was going to buy a Mac-compatible print server until I saw your post.

I'm a Mac Mini newbie and I spent a couple of hours this morning trying to get it to print to an HP Laser Jet 1300 that is networked using the Linksys PSUS4.

It worked fine when directly connected via USB, but I could NOT get it to work on the network. I could ping the print server, but when I printed I got an error message "remote host did not accept data file (32)".

I was missing the "lp" in the queue field. It nows works beautifully.

Thanks very much.

FizzySteve
