Send long SMS with Address Book via Bluetooth

Can anyone answer as to why it's so hard now to find a free SMS texting service in the UK?
Is the business model of UK providers wildly different to those in the US or the rest of the world or what?
It used to be that you could visit a website and type your message in and send it to a mobile. Now you have to jump through hoops typing in numbers from images or pay a subscription.
I was just looking into writing some scripts which will alert me via SMS whenever one of my websites goes down - before the client informs me - but I have so far found no way to send the SMS message. I'm considering subscribing to a service found on google but I can't test any scripts until I sign up so I have no idea if they are going to work.

So, I said ... well, I can't actually remember exactly what I said. But it was one of the most enormously cruel and frighteningly witty put downs ever.

If your provider is Orange this can be easily accomplished using their free email2sms service which can be activated via their website.
