The FAQ still has an entry:
"Why aren't there any banner ads?"

:-P

Yea, that's on the list to tackle this weekend. I had my hands full this week just getting the site ready for the ads, so some stuff got back burnered :).

FAQ has been updated...

I have updated the FAQ. The question now reads:
How come there are ads? I thought the site was ad-free?
And the FAQ answer is:
For nearly four years, macosxhints.com was ad-free. I liked it this way, and at the time, it made sense for me. This FAQ used to ask "Why aren't there any banner ads here?" The answer had many reasons, but one sentence in particular read "As long as I can make the economics work reasonably well without ads, MacOSXHints will remain advertising free." In September of 2004, the economics changed.

In order to spend more time on the site, I dropped from full-time salary to part-time at my "day" job, and now spend two full days a week working directly on the site. In order to make these economics work for my family, I had to find a way to try to supplant the reduced income. After studying many alternatives, I decided that a selection of ads from targeted Mac vendors made the most sense, so I researched the available networks. I finally selected BackBeat Media, who handle a number of popular Mac sites -- they seem to share my love of the Mac, and ban the most annoying ads (audio, pop-ups, overly hyperactive animation, etc.).

So that's why we have ads now.
