Change has come to macosxhints.com...

If this is actually sucking up so much time that you've got to cut down on work, Rob, don't hesitate for a moment. I say this even though a Microsoft ad is currently staring me in the face -- so you know I mean it!

So, point of ignorance on my part: is Rob's revenue from this tied directly to the number of times people click on the banners? Or indirectly, or not at all (except that advertisers with no refs. from macosxhints.com will cease to advertise)?

I can imagine a new raft of hints: how to set up a cron script to curl macosxhints.com and automatically click the banner ad... how to stagger the timing of such hits... how to spoof a random IP address every time you do it.... Any takers? :-)

I don't like your idea, sounds more like s scum. I think that if want to help the site and Rob the best thing to do is actually pay for this cool tips. I propose a dollar a month. I know a lot of people can pay one lonely dollar a month for good stuff.

I just can't think of any free Microsoft zone. They get in everywhere.

The ads here are not necessarily based on click-thrus, though those are certainly tracked. The problem with click-thru sales is that (a) the stats are easily swayed by robots, etc., and (b) if an ad is 'ugly' or unappealing, the site owner is punished when nobody clicks it. Hence, these are sold as exposure ads (so many page views for so much money), but advertisers will look at click-thrus when they go to renew.

So yes, viewing helps, as does occasional clicking if you're interested. But mass clicking, etc., doesn't help, as the stats will just get cleansed of obvious mass clicks :).
