G5 iMac

The new iMac G5 certainly is plain. I don't know yet whether I find it refreshingly so, or just boring. It remains to be seen how well it will sell, but the cost of making it is a lot less than making the iMac G4 Flat Panel, with its chrome neck, etc., so from the standpoint of the number of iMacs Apple would sell anyway, regardless of its appearance, Apple will save a lot there. They also dropped about $300 from the average price, so they've automatically reduced how much profit they'll make, but maybe that'll help sell more of them, which may offset the loss of sales to people who won't buy it because it's so plain.

I do think they should have found something interesting to do with the space below the display, or not have that space to begin with--people would have been more impressed if they only thing they saw on their desk was a screen, and no visible computer paneling. But it'll be a convenient place to put Post-It notes, which I usually have all over my computer displays.

I agree with the complaints that the ports should have been along the side, or maybe some clever rotatable or repositionable port panel should have been implemented so you'd have a choice--at least, Apple should have done at least ONE clever thing regarding the external design or appearance. The "new" design was actually one of the old designs Apple was considering when they decided to retire the picture tube iMacs, before they decided on the table lamp design. I've been grumbling for years to myself about computers that have ports in the rear, wondering why computer manufacturers place a higher value on appearance than ease of use. Some PC manufacturers have several ports in the front, and nobody's turning up their nose at those. Lots of people frequently plug in and unplug USB flash drives, iPods, and other things. I suppose a USB hub is fine, but does anyone make a Firewire hub? Then again, you can always leave cables plugged in, snaked around to the front, waiting to be plugged into something. I wouldn't be surprised if some company designs a port extender box that you can attach to the right side, or sit it on the tabletop if you want.

Yep, FireWire hubs exist. Web search for "firewire hub". :-)
