Extract the Apple Remote Desktop 2.0 client installer

Maybe I'm missing something here, but there is a upgrade client software menu choice, and a change client settings menu choice. You can do it all with the remote desktop admin application. I don't see why you would bother doing it separately???

Well, i think the idea behind the menu option for creating a package installer is that you can customize the settings, create the package, then just push the package out to all your clients. When you have 50+, even 10+, configuring once, then pushing it out there is much more desireable than individually selecting and configuring. Even though you have the extra step of actually making the package. Either way, you are correct, you can simply select the clients you want to upgrade and upgrade them to the default ARD 2.0 install.

I've had to manually install the client on three of our 48 Macs from failures with the upgrade from 1.2.4 to 2.0. After the initial failure all other attempts failed with an error something like "can't replace the file..". If I was to do it all over again, I would extract the package and push it with ARD 1.2 and not rely on the "upgrade clients" feature of ARD2.

Ditto here.

I tried to use the update feature and it didn't work on any of the ~100 machines we have.

After using the Create Client Installer feature, we were then able to deploy the update without a hitch.
