When I was still using Classic apps, I, too, wanted faster access to recent items. I used FruitMenu to add an alias to the Classic environment's Recent Items folder into the OS X Apple Menu, right below the native OS X Recent Items (now able to split between docs and apps), so it was a consistent transition/translation from the Legacy Mac OS. I also added Recent Items to my Contextual Menus (also via FruitMenu), so they were always a Right-Click (Control-Click) away without drifting up to the Apple Menu, then down...
