Disk Utility - burn

I used Disk Utility in this situation. I found a Disk Image (a .dmg) file (didn't matter what as I was not going to really use it) and clicked "burn" in Disk utility. Disk Utility spat the disk so I could "insert" a blank disk. Viola!

Here's something every Mac -- since 1984 -- will understand.

On restart, press and hold the mouse button. This force-unmounts all volumes. Release the button once you have all your disks out, your Mac will then begin its usual boot routine.
