Odd OS X Samba to Linux issue and workaround

I've had the same sort of problems since upgrading to Panther - Jaguar was fine (albeit poor at SMB networking in other ways). In my case, we're also running netatalk on the Linux servers, and I thought the issue could be something to do with the shares having the same names via both SMB and AFP. Is that a feature of your installation?

Nope, our environment is purely SMB with a bunch of XP boxes and my lone powerbook. So far, the only thing I can't do in my office (besides use the windows-based compilers) is read encrypted MS Office docs. OpenOffice can't do the encryption :(
