10.3: A quick fix for USB-to-Serial (MCT) support
Authored by: mlgoodson on May 28, '04 10:38:24AM

Short Version...
Had the same problem, but changing ownership didn't ultimately solve the problem, but getting the Prolific PL2303G driver did.

The Full Story...
I seemed to have been having the same problem with my MCT U232-P9(M?--it has a 6ft cord) UBS-to-Serial adapter. I am using it to connect a Garmin Geko 201 GPS and use MacGPS Pro (5). Before changing owner System Profiler/System/Extensions said that there were permission errors and that is was not authentic. Changed the owner as described and this was corrected and SP now said it was authentic. However when I plugged in my adapter it still won't load. Can't really say as I know why. Anyway, the adapter came with a CD with a bunch of drivers for stuff that I didn't have. After a little playing around, I found the Y-105 driver was for my USB-Serial adapter. This driver installed a PL2303G system extension for the classic OS. This got me looking some more and I ran across the Prolific USB-Serial adapter and found an PL2303G driver for OS X (I found it at http://www.sewelld.com/USBtoSerialSupportMac.asp). After installing, my adapter now works fine and I can connect my GPS to MacGPSPro.
