Just use the preference setting in Mail..
If you are using Apple Mail just make sure the checkbox in the viewing tab is unchecked:
For example I have this with no tick in the box and only on genuine HTML mails (e.g the apple newsletter ) I click the "load images" button in the mail.
Far easier than keeping your netinfo/hosts file updated with all the spammers hostnames
